WASHINGTON, D.C. - This week, the Congressional Women’s Softball Game (CWSG) organizing committee announced the rosters for its ninth annual game, which will take place on June 21, 2017. The rosters of the Members of Congress team and the Press team are stacked with new players from around the country. Rookies on the Members team include Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, Rep. Stephanie Murphy, Rep. Claudia Tenney, and Rep. Norma Torres. For the Press team, rookies include ABC News’ Mary Bruce, Real Clear Politics’ Emily Goodin, PBS NewsHour’s Erica Hendry and Pamela Kirkland, CNN’s Leigh Munsil, New York Times’ Alicia Parlapiano, and Huffington Post’s Kate Sheppard. The CWSG organizing committee also announced that they have already raised more than $200,000 in corporate sponsorship, individual donations, and ticket sales to benefit the Young Survival Coalition– a new record this early in the season. Ticket sales and sponsorships are still available through the game on June 21st. To date, the CWSG has raised over one million dollars since the game’s founding to benefit young women under 40 who have been diagnosed with breast cancer – a disease no woman should have to face alone.
Cook Political Report’s and Press Captain Amy Walter said, "Every year I look forward to playing in the Congressional Women's Softball Game. Whether we are proposing and voting on legislation or covering those who do, the players who participate have found common ground through our annual game. In a town known for its rough and tumble, it's wonderful to have built these relationships. And, of course, we take great pride in helping to raise much needed funds for young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer."
Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said, "It's wonderful to join our bipartisan team of colleagues once again this year to take several giant swings against breast cancer in young women. After co-founding the game in 2009, I'm thrilled that this will be the ninth time that we take to the softball field to raise funds for the Young Survival Coalition. This opportunity to raise awareness about the unique issues young women face in their fight against breast cancer is an incredibly meaningful one, for which I am deeply grateful."
Senator Shelley Moore Capito said, "I look forward to the Congressional Women’s Softball Game every year where members of Congress put politics aside to raise awareness about breast cancer – something that has had an impact on all of our lives in some way. I can’t wait to get back on the field with my teammates so we can beat the Press and bring back the trophy to where it belongs."
CWSG President and Treasurer Atalie Ebersole said, "We are thrilled about this year's rosters, and we're so proud to be a positive force behind common ground in Washington. We’re grateful that over the past nine years, we have reached our million dollar milestone, having raised over $200,000 in this year alone. There’s a reason why this game is one of the most popular summer events on the Hill -- it’s a way to put aside partisanship for an important cause. We have seen wins and losses on the softball field, and they have strengthened friendships across the aisle, bringing our women leaders together in the common mission of beating cancer."
The Congressional Women’s Softball Game will be held on June 21, 2017 at Watkins Recreation Center, 420 12th Street, SE, Washington, DC 20003. Tickets are $10, and they can be purchased prior to the game online or at the gate. For more information about the game, please visit www.congwomensoftball.org.
