Washington, DC – Tonight, fans filled Watkins Recreation on Capitol Hill to watch the tenth annual Congressional Women’s Softball Game. This year, the game raised more than $320,000 for young women with breast cancer, with all proceeds going directly to the Young Survival Coalition. Although it was a rain-shortened game, the weather held off long enough for the Bad News Babes to secure a 5-0 victory. Roll Call’s Bridget Bowman led the way with a homerun and four RBIs, and Cook Political Report and The Takeaway’s Amy Walter pitched a complete game shutout. For the Members’ team, Cheri Bustos (D-IL-17) and Kathy Castor (D-FL-14) each singled, and Mia Love (R-UT-4) pitched a strong five innings. Bowman was voted MVP for the Press Team’s Bad News Babes, and Love was voted MVP for the Members of Congress Team.

“I’m incredibly proud that we have had ten successful years of the Congressional Women’s Softball Game. Republicans, Democrats, and members of the press all come together year after year with the same goal - to raise money for young women battling cancer,” said Congressional Women’s Softball Game President and Treasurer Atalie Ebersole. “We thank all of our players and fans for your support and dedication to the cause. This game wouldn’t be possible without you.”

To open the game, Mindy Cohn of Facts of Life, Megan Cavanagh of League of their Own, Principal of Watkins and Peabody Elementary Schools Elena Bell on behalf of General Motors, and Mylan’s Tara Bielski, threw out the first pitches and got the crowd ready for a night of softball. During the 5th inning, Wil Gravatt and Rep. Rick Crawford came together on the field to sing “Stand by Me” as a tribute to cancer survivors.

To date, CWSG has raised more than $1.4 million dollars for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC). YSC’s core mission is to benefit young women under 40 who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. These women are the reason we come together each June, and we look forward to continuing to support them in the future.
